Lexea is a fictional company dedicated to creating learning modules and content for kids who struggle with dyslexia. The premise of this project was to create a strong brand identity and a mobile application that will aid in reading and phonetic comprehension. This project aimed to create this brand and app to be presented and shared in order to see if such an investment would be worth investing in.
I had a few weeks to create the Lexea brand identity and brand collaterals that would aid in the conceptual existence of the brand. My primary focus and objective was to learn about accessibility and the needs of special-needs children to design the visual system. This project will also contain a mobile app prototype in which parents can collect data on their child’s phonetic and reading growth.
Audience
Parents, kids, teachers, and tutors.
The Lexea logo Identity heavily pivoted around the incredible intellectual skills of birds and animals. The parrot was the primary symbol of development, intellect, learning, and engaging in fun play. Creating a coherent connection between both dyslexia and development was the primary binding agent to the brand's central identity. This mark had to work syntactically with the presentation of phonic data and engaging fun learning activities for children.
Problem Identifier
Utilizing the mobile space is an excellent tool for parents and teachers to help guide a child who struggles with dyslexia to gain an edge in their reading and writing skills. However, the application space will require a dynamic collection system and diverse learning activities in order to be successful.
Primary Questions
How can we design a responsive and dynamic mobile app that allows children with a large range of reading and writing skills to engage in learning in a single app?
How can we pinpoint a child’s unique reading and phonic level?
How can the application content be crafted and catered to the child's level and still allow for multiple accounts?
Where can the parents see their child's development inside the application?
Creating a designed system with a focus on the user and the reader was the main objective for this project. Many studies and cases concluded that dyslexia can be outgrown and can prevail with a consistent flow of reading and writing material. The brand and the mobile app system are the primary way to send and create content for the child to sustain that consistent material. Another aspect is to present the parents with the data and clear information on where their child’s reading and writing levels are.
As someone who also struggled with a form of dyslexia, I saw this as both a great opportunity and a great challenge to help aid. I understood the emotional frustration that many dyslexic readers and writers struggle with. The present fear of not being able to keep up with the average reader and writer was a frightening and embarrassing thought. Therefore I challenged myself to see this in both the views of the child who struggles with the disorder and the parents who want to help their child grow in their reading and writing abilities.
This project became a great opportunity to both tackle a major academic disorder and allowed me to learn about my experience with dyslexia. Creating an emotional bond with the work also helped me realize that many of the current dyslexic programs create an environment of embarrassment and almost shame for the children. Thereafter, I wanted to create a unique branded system that would allow parents major insights into their child's development and provide the child the ability to grow and become better readers and writers.
